Police Functioning Demystified - Part VII Criminal Investigation Department - CID

ree

The word CID (Criminal Investigation Department) conjures up a picture of hunky sleuths in blazers and dark goggles, stealthily lurking around everywhere eavesdropping on other’s conversations. The image has been bolstered by various Bollywood movies and above all, the TV serial “CID”. The serial shows them all over the city fighting crime. Whenever any crime happens in any part of the city, they rush there to solve it.

CID is part of the Mumbai Police and is headed by the Jt.CP (Crime). It is headquartered in the CP Office (Commissioner of Police Office) opposite Crawford Market. There are different units across Mumbai for administrative convenience.

The fact is that, whenever a crime happens, it is the Policemen from the nearest Police Station who rushes to the crime spot. The case does not invariably go to the CID. The local Police investigate and only if they are not able to investigate further due to the specialized nature of the crime, the case is handed over to the CID for further investigation.

The CID is also heavily into intelligence collection apart from investigating specialized crimes.

We will talk more about CBI in Part VIII.
